LONG TAILED PARAKEET

BURUNG BAYAN NURI

Long-tailed Parakeet (Psittacula longicauda)

Sg. Siput - 23/11/2024

The Long-tailed Parakeet is a colorful and graceful bird native to Southeast Asia, particularly in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. It thrives in lowland forests, mangroves, and even plantations, adapting well to varied environments.

This medium-sized parakeet measures around 40 cm in length, with more than half of this length attributed to its long, slender tail. Its plumage is vibrant: the body is predominantly green, while the face features a striking red patch on the cheeks. Males have a distinctive black stripe running across their lores and throat, whereas females lack this marking. Both sexes have bluish hues on their tail feathers.

The Long-tailed Parakeet feeds mainly on fruits, seeds, and nuts. It is highly social, often found in large, noisy flocks that fly swiftly through the treetops. Their loud, screeching calls are typical of parakeets and help maintain group cohesion.

Unfortunately, their populations are declining due to habitat destruction, including deforestation and conversion of forests into agricultural lands. Conservation efforts are essential to protect their habitats and ensure their survival.

LITTLE BRONZE CUCKOO

BURUNG SEWAH DAUN

Little Bronze Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx minutillus)

04082024 - Semenyih

I recently encountered a bird in the rain while it was searching for food in the lotus swamp area. Its presence was somewhat challenging to identify due to its similarity in color to the lotus tree environment. The bird is small in size, with a bronze-colored back and tail, an underpart body with white and black stripes colors, and eyes with two red lines, which I found particularly captivating.

The Little Bronze Cuckoo is a petite and vibrant bird found across Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and the surrounding islands. This cuckoo is known for its metallic sheen and diminutive size, making it a delight for bird enthusiasts.

Measuring only about 15–17 cm in length, the Little Bronze Cuckoo features metallic bronze-green upperparts, a white underside with dark barring, and a striking red eye-ring. Males and females are similar, but females often have subtler coloring. This cuckoo is a brood parasite, meaning it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, particularly smaller species like gerygones. The host birds then raise the cuckoo chick, often at the expense of their own offspring. The Little Bronze Cuckoo primarily feeds on insects and caterpillars, foraging in forest edges, mangroves, and gardens. Despite their intriguing behavior, they are quite inconspicuous and can be challenging to spot.
