Little Egret

Little Egret (Egretta garzetta).

It is a small white heron easily identified by several distinct features visible in your photo:

  • The "Golden Slippers": The most tell-tale sign is the combination of long black legs and bright yellow feet.

  • The Bill: It has a long, slender, all-black bill.

  • The Lores: The patch of skin between the eye and the bill is a pale blue-grey (which can change to pink or red during the peak of breeding season).

  • Plumage: It has pure white feathers, and you can see some of the delicate "aigrette" plumes extending from its back over the tail.

These birds are common in wetlands, salt marshes, and mudflats across much of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia. They are active hunters, often seen using those bright yellow feet to stir up the water and disturb small fish or crustaceans.
