GARNET PITTA

BURUNG PACAT DELIMA BIASA

GARNET PITTA (Erythropitta granatina)

10/02/2022
Lokasi: Taman Negara Merapoh

The Garnet Pitta is a strikingly colorful bird found in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. It thrives in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests, but sadly, its habitat is under threat due to deforestation.

This bird is about 17 cm long and has a vivid appearance: a black head with a bright blue stripe above the eyes, a red cap, and a dark blue breast transitioning to carmine red below. Its back and wings are adorned with bright blue feathers, making it a visual gem. Juvenile Garnet Pittas, however, are mostly brown.

The Garnet Pitta is an insectivore, feeding on ants, beetles, cockroaches, and wood grubs. It is shy and elusive, often foraging on the forest floor and favoring dense understory. Its song is a long, slightly broken whistle.

Unfortunately, this bird is classified as "Near Threatened" on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss.
