The Orange-headed Thrush is a vibrant songbird across South and Southeast Asia forests. It is known for its striking coloration, melodious voice, and secretive nature.

Physical Appearance

  • Males boast bright orange plumage on the head, breast, and belly, complemented by smooth bluish-grey upperparts.
  • Females and juveniles are browner, with a more muted orange below.
  • Some subspecies have black facial markings, adding to their distinctiveness.

Behavior & Ecology

  • Prefers dense undergrowth, where it forages on the ground for insects, earthworms, and fruit.
  • Shy and often solitary, it moves with a characteristic hopping motion, pausing to listen for prey.
  • Its song is sweet, melodious, and varied, often resembling other thrush species.

Habitat & Range

  • Found in moist forests, shaded gardens, and bamboo groves.
  • Occurs from India and Nepal to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, adapting well to different elevations.
